Children's Liturgy of the Word
What is It?
Liturgy of the Word for Children is a special opportunity for children ages 4–9 to experience the Sunday Scripture readings in a way that is meaningful and accessible to them. During the 8:30 AM and 10:45 AM Sunday Masses from September through June, children are invited to hear and reflect on God’s Word through age-appropriate language, prayer, music, and activities. No registration is necessary-children are welcome to participate anytime.
What exactly do the children do?
After the Opening Prayer at Mass, children are called forward and sent forth with a blessing from the presider. They then proceed to the Parish Hall with their leaders.
Each Sunday liturgy includes:
- Music for gathering
- Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation
- A Gospel reading
- Reflections on the Gospel
- Prayers of the Faithful
- A short video
- A home activity sheet
The children return to the church and rejoin their families at the time of the Presentation of the Gifts.
What is the schedule?
The program runs from September through the last Sunday in June, during the 8:30 AM and 10:45 AM Masses. Please note that Children's Liturgy may be unavailable on certain holidays or during designated Family Masses.
How you can help . . .
Adult Leaders - a minimum of 2 adults per session is needed to lead the Scripture service, reflection and prayers at each Sunday Mass for both age groups. Leaders of each age group per Mass are scheduled on a rotating basis; detailed leader resources for preparation and reflection are provided; previous experience is not required as this is a ministry of faith-sharing rather than teaching.
Teen Leaders - middle and high school students are needed to help the adult leaders by reading, leading discussion, etc.
